Overview

Developed within the context of the Horizon Europe REST-COAST project, this mobile app provides the tools for enhancing public understanding and engagement with coastal ecosystem restoration. Featuring a visually engaging design aligned with the project's visual identity, it helps to raise awareness among citizens by illustrating the current challenges faced by coastal zones, demonstrated through real-case scenarios from each of the nine REST-COAST pilot sites.

We were subcontracted by Pensoft Publishers to design and develop the mobile app, delivering the full end-to-end development.

Problem & Objectives

The project needed a way to:

  • Keep citizens informed about ongoing restoration projects and investments.
  • Provide up-to-date, multilingual content without frequent app redeployment.
  • Ensure accessibility even in low-connectivity coastal environments.
  • Deliver an engaging, user-friendly experience across devices.
  • Present restoration sites in a structured way, showing their unique threats, measures, and outcomes.
  • Offer both site-specific and general views of threats (e.g., seabed erosion) to help citizens understand local and global challenges.
  • Support long-term scalability for new sites, threats, and results as the project evolves.

The Solution

We built My REST-COAST as an informational, community-facing mobile app, designed for scalability and long-term content growth.

Key features include:

  • Dynamic content updates – new articles, news, and materials can be published without redeploying the app.
  • Site explorer – interactive maps and detail pages where each location shows its unique threats, measures, and results.
  • Threats overview – a global list of threats with general background information, complemented by site-level details.
  • CMS integration – extended OctoberCMS with a custom plugin for seamless content management.
  • Offline mode – users can access content and maps even in remote field conditions.
  • Multilingual support – ensuring inclusivity across different regions and audiences.
  • CDN integration – optimized content delivery across geographies
